UNIT 2 – TEXT COMPREHENSION – «A PICTURE DESCRIPTION»

Read the following answer given by a C1-level student to an examiner during the speaking part of an English exam, in which she has to describe a picture that is laid out in front of her. Then, answer the questions below.

A PICTURE DESCRIPTION

Examiner – «Alright, Samantha. Have a look at this picture here and describe it as well as you can.«

Samantha – «Well… The picture shows a lively street procession taking place in what seems to be a South Asian country, probably India or Sri Lanka. The scene is full of color, movement, and cultural symbols. At the center, several elephants are walking calmly through a crowd. They are beautifully decorated with colorful fabrics, gold ornaments, and detailed patterns that make them look majestic. Each elephant carries a small structure or umbrella on its back, which seems to be part of a religious or ceremonial tradition.

In front of the elephants, a group of men dressed in bright yellow and white clothes are leading the way. Two of them are carefully unrolling a long white cloth on the ground, possibly to create a clean and sacred path for the procession. Their movements look slow and respectful, matching the solemn tone of the event.

On both sides of the street, many people are standing and watching. Most of them are wearing traditional clothes, and they seem to be taking part in the celebration with calm and respect. The whole scene is surrounded by tall green trees, which makes the setting look tropical and peaceful. The natural light shining through the leaves gives the image a warm, almost golden atmosphere.
